See Yourself as You Want to Be

A vision board will help you feel the desired states of being and emotion on an ongoing basis
By Ernest Holmes

We are—and can only be—the sum total of all our thoughts and actions. Our subjective state of thought is constantly radiating into Universal Law the images of our entire library of beliefs… our beliefs around love, around life, around the world and our purpose in it. From these images of unconscious thought spring all of our outward conditions, the circumstances that make up this human experience. Deep within our subconscious mind are imprinted the memories of previous experiences… and therein lie the silent causes of our outward conditions.

Since the Universal Law which automatically receives our thoughts is always acting and never at rest, when we have chronic, habitual negative thoughts, we perpetuate experiences that we no longer want to have. What is needed, then, is a new outlook on the situation, a broader vision, a deeper realization. We need not be able to create this new perspective on the spot… we need only beopen to the possibility that one exists.  And of course one does.  In fact, the Spirit that Knows All Things has unlimited outcomes, all of which have already outwitted your greatest conundrum a thousand-fold.

The key, then, to success and happiness, is the conscious control of ongoing thought patterns and a continuous emission of constructive thinking and acting. This key will unlock the treasure house of the Infinite and reveal to us undreamed-of opportunities and experiences.

Because we are of the One Mind, any vision you can conjure of an outcome which is based in harmony and unity is already complete in the mind of Spirit.  It is Divinely ordained.

Visualization from this standpoint is a creative act that is never bothered by any existing condition or conditions. Once we are certain that our whole thought is harmonious and unified with Good, we may ask for what we want, and it shall be done unto us by the Law.

In visualizing, put the past entirely behind, where it belongs; nor think of the future, where it also belongs, but make your thoughts perceive the ever-present reality, which is only the NOW.  Do not worry about the “how’s.” God knows how!

Think of yourself as you would like to be, and calmly state that you are now in the position that you care to be in; that you are now doing the things you would like to be doing; that you now possess the things you want to possess; that your state of being is the ultimate state of being you can possibly imagine. Look at your picture as you would view a landscape, mentally dwelling on this picture, feeling the reality of it—the Joy of it, the Peace of it, the Love of it, the Prosperity of it, the Vitality of it—until you can sense that it is a reality.  Then leave the entire picture for the Law to work out for you, returning to your everyday affairs with perfect confidence that something is really taking place on the invisible side of your life, and that you will experience in outward form all of your inner aspirations.

As you speak as if the good outcome is already done, it is in the mind of God!

Positive Poems, Thoughts, and Quotes on Death, Dying, Immortality, Heroes, and Eternity

Everyone on this earth has lost loved ones. This is a natural and universal aspect of material existence. There is one universal Life Force, expressing Itself through all beings. The same Consciousness that expressed Itself through my loved ones who have moved on is now expressing Itself through every being around me. When loving others and offering my gifts, I love and honor myself and all of Life.

In that spirit, I offer this collection to you which I gathered for a service I designed that was held today at Awakened Heart called “9/11, In Memorium”:

When The Day came —
The Day I had lived and died for —
The Day that is not in any calendar —
Clouds heavy with love
Showered me with wild abundance.
Inside me, my soul was drenched with joy.
Around me, even the desert grew green.
–Kabir

No one can be responsible for someone else’s death. Each soul has selected the hour and the place when he or she will transition from this plane. Others are simply the instruments we use for our departure.
— Ernest Holmes

The bitterest tears shed over graves
are for words left unsaid
and deeds left undone.
–Harriet Beecher Stowe

For death really begins with life’s first breath,
And real life begins at the touch of death.
–John Oxenham

True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.
–Arthur Ashe

Because I could not stop for death
He kindly stopped for me.
The carriage held but just ourselves
And immortality.
– Emily Dickinson

There is but one freedom:
To put oneself right with death.
After that everything is possible.
I cannot force you to believe in God.
Believing in God amounts to coming
to terms with death. When you have
accepted death, the riddle of God
will be solved–and not the reverse.
— Camus, Albert

Seeing death as the end of life is like seeing the horizon as the end of the ocean.
-David Searls

There is no death! What seems so is transition;
This life of mortal breath
Is but a suburb of the life elysian,
Whose portal we call Death.
-Henry W. Longfellow

Heroes are great precisely because they do not allow fear and other human weaknesses to deter them from doing great works.
A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.
—Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
and never stops at all.
-Emily Dickenson

Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.
—Helen Keller

There is nothing the body suffers which the soul may not profit by.
— George Meredith

God shall wipe all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death,
nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
-Revelation 21:4

I think only through suffering all our wonderful human qualities come out in us. Unless and until you suffer, how will you understand other’s suffering?”
-Sree Chakravarti

We need to ask, “What is death? What is the nature of that energy, that power, that consciousness which, when it was in the body, caused it to think, speak, move, love, feel and create?” When that energy leaves the body, that energy is still living, breathing, thinking, moving, loving, feeling, and creating. It is simply happening in another form that most of us cannot directly appreciate until we, ourselves, die.

Loss is a basic part of our life cycle. Whatever is born must die. Whatever grows must decay. These are universal laws. We tend to forget that these physical bodies are mortal. Everything we see around us will—one day—decay and cease to be. That includes all plants, animals, people, buildings, cities, the planet earth, the sun and even the galaxies. Everything in the physical universe is temporary. When this fact is understood and accepted, we are free to discover inner and everlasting sources of security and happiness.

Heroes take journeys, confront dragons, and discover the treasure of their true selves.
—Carol Pearson

I believe it is the nature of all people to be heroes, given the chance.
—James A. Autry

Contact with death awakens us to the fact that someday we too will die. This generates a number of questions. Why have we taken our own physical body? Is our life part of some greater process? If so, what does it require of us? Will we have fulfilled our life purpose? How can we live our lives more in harmony with that purpose? Answering these questions might motivate us to change our life style, live a more meaningful existence, improve our character, purify our love, or investigate the deeper truths of life. We may also discover that life is more meaningful when we value others and their needs.

Real heroes are men who fall and fail and are flawed, but win out in the end because they’ve stayed true to their ideals and beliefs and commitments.
—Kevin Costner

This, to me, is the ultimate heroic trait of ordinary people: they say no to the tyrant, and they calmly take the consequences of this resistance.
–Philip K. Dick

Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along. And upon the death of one, still so they remain.

When The Day came —
The Day I had lived and died for —
The Day that is not in any calendar —
Clouds heavy with love
Showered me with wild abundance.
Inside me, my soul was drenched with joy.
Around me, even the desert grew green.
–Kabir

My place is the placeless,
the trace of the traceless
neither body
or soul

I belong to the Beloved,
have seen the two worlds as One
and that One is
First,
Last,
Outer,
Inner.

Only that breath
breathing,
human
being.
— Rumi

There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness.
–Dalai Lama

Today, more than ever before, life must be characterized by a sense of Universal responsibility, nation to nation, human to human, and human to other forms of life.
–Dalai Lama

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
— Rabindranath Tagore

God, the universal life-force and energy running through everything, is an intelligent presence pervading all space; a self-existent cause; a perfect unit, a complete wholeness, and it is always Good.
–Ernest Holmes

No one can rob us of our own soul, and our spirit is already one with the eternal goodness.
–Ernest Holmes

You and I are born out of God, and just as we are born out of a divine urge that creates, so do we die. It is all creation. It is all evolution.
–Ernest Holmes

Wake up! Your word is all powerful. Your consciousness is one with Omnipotence. Your thought is infinite. Your destiny is eternal and your home is everlasting heaven.
–Ernest Holmes

We have within us a power that is greater than anything that we shall ever contact in the outer, a power that can overcome every obstacle in our life and set us safe, satisfied and at peace, healed and prosperous, in a new light, and in a new life. Mind, all mind, is right here. It is God’s Mind, God’s creative Power, God’s creative Life. We have as much of this Power to use in our daily life as we can believe in and embody.
–Ernest Holmes

Perfect peace to the soul rests in the realization of our unity with all there is, was, or ever will be. We are one with Infinite Mind. All the power of Spirit is working through our thought as we believe and receive.
–Ernest Holmes

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
–Albert Einstein

Life is not separate from death. It only looks that way.
–Blackfoot Proverb

When I was hungry
I have killed the deer
and the plants he feeds upon.
I have taken fish from the water
And birds from the sky.
In my life I have needed death
So that my life can be.
As I live and when I die
I must also give life
To what has nourished me.
The earth receives my body
And gives it to the plants
And to the caterpillars
To the birds
And to the coyotes
Each in its own turn so that
The circle of life is never broken.
–Native American Prayer

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
–Mary Frye

Affirmative Prayer for Surgery

If you know someone having surgery, you can say this prayer for them to bring about the best outcome:

As there is only One Presence, and it is Life Itself, and it is always conspiring for ever-expanding Good, I know I am also of that One Presence, as I know (insert name) is, for we are indivisible from One. And so I know that right here and now the same forces that created the Universe and its unlimited potential are at work right now, revealing the absolute Perfection of Life Itself that is exquisitely being expressed as (insert name). I know the surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and everyone involved today are the perfect agents of the Universe to reveal this perfection, calmly rushing in to expand (insert name)’s Good, for the Highest Good of All. I am so grateful, and as I release my all-powerful word into the Universal Law of Mind, I know it is already done. And so it is!

Spiritual Mind Treatment (Affirmative Prayer) Worksheet

Thoughts become things… choose the good ones! ~ Tut.com.

Your word kicks off the active creative process. Truth, particularly when spoken aloud and with passion, not only imprints onto your own consciousness, it is an energy so powerful that it becomes a thing itself.

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

What is the end result you desire? (a rewarding job, a romantic relationship, perfect health, renewed passion for life, a new baby, etc.):

QUALITIES OF GOD: Choose 1 – 5 Qualities of God to reveal in order to manifest your end result:
Unity
Omniscience
Omnipotence
Omnipresence
Omni-activeness
Wholeness
Love
Perfection
Peace
Joy
Abundance
Freedom
Truth
Divine Right Order
Wisdom
Creativity
Balance
Harmony
Passion
Beauty
Clarity
Divine Right Action

The 5 Steps of the Spiritual Mind Treatment:

RECOGNITION

Here we recognize that if God exists, then God is All There Is:

God is, and God is indivisible from Itself; therefore, there is only One Presence. It is infinite, absolute, all-providing, ever-expanding, life-giving Good, and it is All There Is. And so I know that God is (insert a statement affirming the undeniable reality of each quality of God chosen):

UNIFICATION

Here we acknowledge our own individualized & perfect expression of the Infinite:

If God is All There Is, then I, too, must be of God. The Divine, in all Its infinite power and glory, is individually expressed in, as, and through me; therefore, I know that I am also (insert statements affirming your own inherent Nature to be each quality of God that you chose above):

REALIZATION

Here we outline, claim, and accept the specific desired result, knowing that we are worthy of such Good and are receptive to it forming now. It is important to be specific and speak with conviction. See it unfolding fully; right now; totally; completely; viscerally; utterly; deeply; entirely; clearly; profoundly; strongly; right here, etc.:

And, so I now speak my word that…

I claim and accept…

I choose…

I release (fear, doubt, negativity, etc./ anything that does not look like a Quality of God)…

I AM…

I know…

I receive…

THANKSGIVING

Here we express our gratitude for the shift in consciousness that is creating this perfect manifestation now:

RELEASE

We let go of the “how” and align with the perfect and wondrous ways and means for our good to come to us:

I release my word into the Universal Law of Mind, knowing that as I speak it, the Universe says, “Yes!” And, it is already done in absolute perfection, right here and right now! And so it is!

FAQ’s About Science of Mind

Question: What is the Science of Mind belief about Jesus?
Answer: We accept his example and teachings. We do not deny the divinity of Jesus, but rather we affirm the divinity of all people, because God is the Creator of us all. We think of Jesus as an example, not an exception.

Question: Does Science of Mind believe Jesus is our Savior?
Answer: Any world teacher who helps humankind to be free from material, intellectual, or emotional bondage is a spiritual “savior.” Jesus showed us a way to be free, perhaps the most effective way ever known, and it can indeed release mankind from bondage.

Question: What does Science of Mind believe about the Bible?
Answer: It is one among many sacred scriptures, all of which were inspired by the One Mind and presented through various spiritual teachers. We believe that for Western people, the Judeo-Christian scriptures can offer a useful path to spiritual freedom. And we also find truth in many of the world’s sacred texts.

Question: What does Science of Mind believe about God?
Answer: God is that transcendent and beautiful Mystery: the Origin of all; the Sustainer of all; the Truth of all that is; Presence and Principle; Love and Law; Life Itself, and the Substance of all form. This is, in part, our concept of God, but no person can fully explain what God is, since God is infinite.

Question: Does Science of Mind believe in Eternal Damnation?
Answer: No, we do not. God does not create life and then destroy or condemn it. As free individuals, we may bring great difficulties upon ourselves, but that is as near as we come to so-called damnation. Then it is God, as perfect Law, Love, and Truth, to whom we may turn for release from these difficulties. The choice is always ours.

Question: Does Science of Mind believe in Hell?
Answer: Heaven and Hell are states of mind, and neither is a literal geographical place. Modern science has demonstrated that there is no actual “up” or “down” in this universe, where heaven or hell might be. Both are in our minds.

Question: Does Science of Mind believe in Heaven?
Answer: There are certain exalted inner states of consciousness which may be more like the “Kingdom of Heaven” than our everyday life on earth, but we must always realize that God is here and now, and to know this is to sense something of what heaven is.

Question: Does Science of Mind believe in the Ten Commandments?
Answer: Yes, for we affirm the validity of this wise and useful code of conduct, this intelligent and loving life pattern.

Question: Does Science of Mind believe in good and evil?
Answer: God is the Source of all, beyond good and evil. God simply is. But in human life, where our freedom allows us to make mistakes (so-called “sin”), our comparisons of actions to what would have been better lead us to ideas of good or evil. However, they are human inventions, for ultimately there is only God: Infinite Love and Truth.

Question: Does Science of Mind believe in a “Hereafter”?
Answer: We believe in the eternal now, which includes both here and hereafter, for Life is an ever-unfolding experience of God’s Self-expression. There is much, much more to it than what this world contains. We do not, however, believe in sudden change in our whole nature when we leave this plane, for we retain our individual identity. And so it is that “immortality” is not something awaiting us in the future, because we are immortal now! In other, yet unseen dimensions of life, there are new fields to conquer, new challenges, new and beautiful Truths to discover in an unlimited and divine Cosmic Universe.

“What We Believe” by Ernest Holmes

“What We Believe,” by Ernest Holmes, was published in the first issue of Science of Mind magazine, October, 1927.

  • We believe in God, the Living Spirit Almighty; one, indestructible, absolute and self-existent Cause. This One manifests itself in and through all creation but is not absorbed by its creation. The manifest universe is the body of God; it is the logical and necessary outcome of the infinite self-knowingness of God.
  • We believe in the incarnation of the Spirit in everyone and that all people are incarnations of the One Spirit.
  • We believe in the eternality, the immortality, and the continuity of the individual soul, forever and ever expanding.
  • We believe that Heaven is within us and that we experience it to the degree that we become conscious of it.
  • We believe the ultimate goal of life to be a complete emancipation from all discord of every nature, and that this goal is sure to be attained by all.
  • We believe in the unity of all life, and that the highest God and the innermost God is one God.
  • We believe that God is personal to all who feel this Indwelling Presence.
  • We believe in the direct revelation of Truth through the intuitive and spiritual nature of the individual, and that any person may become a revealer of Truth who lives in close contact with the indwelling God.
  • We believe that the Universal Spirit, which is God, operates through a Universal Mind, which is the Law of God; and that we are surrounded by this Creative Mind which receives the direct impress of our thought and acts upon it.
  • We believe in the healing of the sick through the power of this Mind.
  • We believe in the control of conditions through the power of this Mind.
  • We believe in the eternal Goodness, the eternal Loving-kindness, and the eternal Givingness of Life to all.
  • We believe in our own soul, our own spirit, and our own destiny; for we understand that the life of all is God.
